Understanding areola tattooing after breast cancer surgery
Areola tattooing after mastectomy is one of the final steps in a long journey and for many people, it's a deeply significant one. It's a way of reclaiming something that cancer treatment took away, and for lots of Amanda's clients, it marks a moment of moving forward.
Amanda has worked with many breast cancer survivors and understands the physical and emotional landscape that comes with this kind of work. She'll never rush you, never make assumptions about what you want, and will always follow your lead.
NHS areola tattooing vs specialist realism tattooing - what's the difference?
NHS breast reconstruction teams do offer areola tattooing as part of your care, and it's absolutely worth exploring that route first. However, NHS provision varies considerably between trusts, and the results while perfectly valid, are typically flat in appearance rather than three-dimensional.
Amanda's approach uses advanced 3D shading, colour-matching and foundation art techniques to create an areola that has genuine depth and realism. Many of her clients come to her after NHS tattooing and want to build on or enhance that result. Others choose to come directly to Amanda from the outset.
Either route is valid. Amanda will always be honest with you about what she can add.
When can I have areola tattooing after a mastectomy?
Timing depends on your individual surgical history and healing. As a general guide:
If you've had radiotherapy, your skin may need longer to settle, Amanda will assess this at consultation
If you're still mid-treatment, it's worth booking a consultation now so you're ready when the time comes
Amanda is happy to liaise with your surgical team if helpful. She understands the medical context and speaks that language.
recommended waiting time is at least12 months after reconstruction before tattooing
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your Consultation (£30 - redeemable against treatment)
Amanda's consultations are unhurried. She'll want to understand your surgical history, look at your skin, and set realistic expectations. There's no obligation to proceed.
The Treatment
Treatments typically take two - four hours. Post-surgical skin can sometimes behave differently to unaffected skin, Amanda has good experience with this and adjusts her technique accordingly.
Healing
Healing takes six to eight weeks. Multiple appointments will be needed..
Your questions answered
-
Yes. Amanda has extensive experience working on reconstructed skin, including DIEP flap, implant-based reconstruction and other surgical methods. She'll assess your specific situation at consultation.
-
Colour-matching is one of the most important parts of Amanda's consultation process. She works carefully with tone and undertone to create a result that looks natural to your skin. Many factors will determine healed results and Amanda aims to match the colour the best she can.
-
Loss of sensation is common after mastectomy and reconstruction. It doesn't prevent tattooing. In some cases it means the treatment is more comfortable than expected.
-
If you're currently undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy, tattooing should wait until treatment is complete and your skin has recovered. Amanda can discuss timing with you at a consultation.
